Wendy Zhou’s Seminar: How can we redesign our food system

Wendy Zhou, founder of perfectly imperfect

Food Waste Innovation was honoured to host an inspiring seminar by Wendy Zhou, founder of the social enterprise Perfectly Imperfect. Wendy’s journey began when she discovered that 40% of fresh fruit and vegetables never make it off farms due to their appearance - whether they are too big or too small, not perfectly ripe, wonky, or just slightly imperfect.

Perfectly Imperfect is a community-based gleaning organisation dedicated to rescuing these ‘ugly’ but perfect fruits and vegetables from farmers. They then distribute them to individuals and families in need, with every ten boxes feeding four families.

Since its birth, Perfectly Imperfect’s gleaning network has grown to over 2,000 dedicated members in New Zealand. Their collective efforts have rescued over 350,000 kilograms of perfectly good food, translating into over 1,600,000 meals served within their community.

In this seminar, Wendy talks about how we can redesign our food system so the earth thrives and we can eat positive, good food. You can find the seminar recording in our Resource Hub - link here.
