Food Waste Awareness Day

The 29th of September 2020 marked the first annual International Day of Awareness for Food Loss and Waste, initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The Food Waste Innovation Research Theme took part by creating a display of the 10 most wasted food items in New Zealand households, proportional to how much they are wasted. The food items represented and the weight that is wasted by New Zealand households each year are listed below:

  • Bread (15,174t)

  • Leftovers (12,901t)

  • Oranges and Mandarins (6,302t)

  • Apples (5,117t)

  • Bananas (4,844t)

  • Potatoes (4,767t)

  • Poultry (4,083t)

  • Rice (4,076t)

  • Lettuce (3,754t)

  • Beef (3,208t)

No food was wasted in the process! All food was donated to Dunedin’s food rescue charity KiwiHarvest.
