The Mirosa Report

About this resource: In 2019/2020, the New Zealand Parliamentary Environmental Committee investigated food waste in New Zealand. Food Waste Innovation’s director, Associate Professor Miranda Mirosa, was the expert advisor. Her report summarised the evidence received by the committee and provided advice about and recommendations for the committee’s findings on the briefing. In the report, Miranda detailed forty recommendations on how to reduce food waste in New Zealand. These include:

  • Establishing a national definition for food waste

  • Collecting national food waste baseline data

  • Continued funding of R&D of value-added products made from food waste

  • A review of food date labelling practices

  • Education for businesses on the legality and safety of ‘doggy bags’

  • Businesses to monitor and report their food waste data

  • Consumer education about food waste in schools

  • The adoption and communication of a national food waste reduction target

  • Development of a national-level food waste reduction strategy and implementation plan

  • A collaborative whole supply chain approach to food waste prevention

  • Sufficient resourcing of food waste prevention initiatives

  • To scale up our food recovery sector

  • More New Zealand-specific food waste research.
