Careers Advisor Conference

The Careers Advisor Conference, hosted by the University of Otago, brought together Career Advisors (CA) from secondary schools across Aotearoa to help raise awareness of the University of Otago’s offerings and any new developments, which Career Advisors can then take back to their schools and students. Our director, Miranda Mirosa, spoke about our Food Science and Agriculture Innovation programmes’ exciting new curriculum developments, highlighting Food Waste Innovation and our mahi. Miranda was joined by Agriculture Innovation graduate Claire Booker (now working at Silver Fern Farms), who provided a real-world example of the student journey.

Sarah Johnson explaining the upcycled products to the guests

To demonstrate our mahi in the Upcycled Food Lab, the Departments of Food Science and Nutrition, organised by the Food Science Lab technician, Sarah Johnson, catered the lunch as an opportunity to showcase our student's work. On the menu were four upcycled products developed by the Lab:

  1. Vegan chocolate cake from spent grain

  2. Ginger beer brewed from surplus bread

  3. Fruit leather from discarded blueberries

  4. Walnut cookies from walnut “tank solids.”

You can find the recipe for the Vegan chocolate cake and ginger beer in Our Resources hub.
