There were a number of Food Waste related projects which took out awards at the conclusion of ‘Audacious’ for semester 1. Audacious is an entrepreneurship program run each semester by Startup Dunedin which teaches students with great business ideas how to turn these into reality.

There were three groups in this years this year who’s ideas related to food waste innovation, all of whom took out some kind of award.

Reshined Roots (Sydney Collin, Elizabeth Cunliffe, and Molly Goodisson), made crispy snacks from ‘ugly’ carrots and they took out the prize for ‘Best Pitch’. See their instagram HERE. The Star also published an article about this project, read it HERE.

MaltedGold (Ethan Bowner) made a plant-based milk using spent grain from beer brewing. Ethan’s project won the ‘Brass Tacks’ award for attention to detail. See his instagram HERE.

Squirm (Cameron Brewitt) was also a finalist, taking out the ‘Most Audacious’ award. Squirm provides “a solution to an ever-mounting food waste problem wherein everyday kiwis can set up and run a worm farm and properly compost”

Congratulations to all these innovative students! Keep an eye out for their products in the market place sometime soon!
